Causes for lines on your iMac display

Picture 1: Thin lines caused by applied pressure on the inverter.

Thin lines that appear in many different colours can only occur due to these few reasons. Either the GPU chip in your system is dying and needs to be reseated, the display has some hardware defect, the cable attached to the display from the logicboard was bent during installation and pressure was applied at the wrong area.

Small thin lines appear when accidental pressure is applied on the display, as it spoils the inverter which is attached right behind the display in the iMac near the top. As such it is also always recommended to carry it from the bottom with the device facing towards you and both your hands gripping the 2 sides of the main body.

Big bars will appear when the cable is bent during a display replacement and is usually due to the technician’s fault, when replacing the display or taking the iMac apart to fix or diagnose some other issue.
