Picture. 1 How to Access a NAS drive in your Network (Router).
Accessing files through your NAS’s own software in the browser (Basic Solution):
- In the windows search bar, type in “Control panel” and click on it.
- Navigate to “Network and Internet” → “Network and sharing center” → “Advanced sharing settings”(located on the left hand side of the screen).
- Under both the “Private” and “Guest or public”, set the “Network discovery” and “file and printer sharing” to “turn on”
- Open up the file explorer and click “network” or right click and “refresh” the directory
- The name of your NAS should show up and just double-click on it.
- This should open up a new page in your browser where you will be prompted to key in the username and password.
- You now should have access to all your files.
Accessing files directly from the File Explorer (Advanced Solution):
- Open up a browser and type in “find.synology.com” into the address bar
- Copy down the IP address, it will looks something like this “192.168.0.177”
- Open up “file explorer” and click the “This PC” tab. Then right click and add network location
- This will open the “Add Network Location Wizard”. Click “Next”.
- Click “choose a custom network location” and click “next”.
- Click “Browse” and right click “map network drive…”
- Then, in the “folder” address bar, type in “\\(I.P.address you previously copied down)\(Name of the folder in NAS you want to connect to)” E.g. “\\192.168.0.177\video”
- Click “Finish” and then you will return to the previous window where you click “cancel”.
- Now you will be back at the window you were at in step 7. Here you will copy paste the same address you wrote down in step 7 and paste it into this window, and it should show up. The click “next”
- In this step, you can create a custom name for this location, just type it into the text box
- Click “Finish” and now when you access the “file explorer”, your drive/the specific folder you mapped it to will show up right in the file explorer tab, no need to access a web browser for your files.
